This customer helped us polish our landscaping rock designs

This home on the far west side of Springfield wanted the "wow" factor but with rock instead of plants for  low-maintenance landscaping.

"We had been discussing a change for a long time. Our previous landscaping was cluttered, overgrown, and basic," says homeowner Elana E. "We drove through several neighborhoods to get some ideas but we were discouraged with what we saw. It was always the same boxwoods, hydrangeas, overgrown ferns etc. Those plants are safe choices because they are pretty and do well in our zone, but we wanted something different."

Before we started, the home had old, unhealthy, and plain shrubbery. It didn't enhance the look of this beautiful home at all.

A Unique Landscape Challenge

The homeowners wanted a unique look. "We disliked having to constantly trim our boxwoods, prune our thorny roses, and our mulch was a constant battle," Elena says. "We didn’t know what we wanted, but we knew exactly what we didn’t want. We needed something low maintenance to fit our lifestyle so that forced us to start to think outside the box.  We needed something low maintenance to fit our lifestyle so that forced us to start to think outside the box. What if our design was more about the rock than it was about the plants? It couldn’t get any more low maintenance than that right?!

They requested using three different colors and styles of decorative gravel. We do a lot of rock work with bubbling boulders, ponds, dry creek beds. But usually decorative rock is an accent to complement the trees and perennials.

This project took our rock design to a new level!  In this design, the rock design is the focal point and the plants are the accent!  Were we up to task? Absolutely! This project helped us create something totally new and creative, which we love!

To create the look they wanted, and to keep the rocks separate and looking neat and tidy for years to come, we installed steel edging to separated the different rocks.

Benefits of the Rock Design Landscaping

Rock gardens are another layer of design to consider when you are designing your front yard or back yard landscape. As this project demonstrates, rock gardens can be as beautiful as a perennial garden!

In addition, as climate change continues, drought conditions mean we have to consider landscaping that conserves water. Rock gardens like this one allow customers to still have beautiful, elegant landscaping that is low maintenance and conserves water.

This project is a good example of how to use rocks in landscaping. Elena and husband, Truman F. love the new design. "What you guys designed was exactly what we wanted! Something that looks more up to date, clean, and way better use of spacing! Not only is it beautiful but its also low maintenance. We are thrilled to have the best of both worlds."

Other services included:

Landscape edging  - We poured our decorative concrete edging on the outside.

Landscape lighting - Lights leading up to the front door create a welcoming effect.

Perennials - Young perennials will flourish in the front yard in the years to come. We added a vareity of low-maintenance trees, shrubs and perennials, including a dogwood tree, hydrangeas, holly bushes, grasses, daylillies, hostas, asters, and more!

The result is a modern and elegant look that better reflects the beauty of their home.
